The community is built around the Riverwood Golf Course, which has received a 4 and 1/2 star rating from Golf Digest magazine.  Sandhill cranes and other wildlife are plentiful in Riverwood's ponds and extensive green belt areas.

Some neighborhoods have views of the Myakka River, which flows to the west of the community.  Residents can enjoy the onsite health club, bike trails and restaurant.  All residents pay a required association fee that covers landscape and common area maintenance.

After the original developers filed for bankruptcy, Centex Homes took over Riverwood development.  New single family, townhome and villa neighborhoods continue to be built, and a number of resale properties are available.
